Origin

We could say that the Romans invented this dish; at least the earliest iteration thereof. The recipe as it appears in Apicius isn’t exactly the same as what you may be familiar with. A more concrete origin for the American version of this dish can be found in scrapple.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 3/4 cup Oatmeal (uncooked)
  • 3/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Combine all ingredients in large bowl.
  • Shape in loaf and place in loaf pan
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes
  • Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting
